Not Curvy, Tall

Weekend

Layering well to balance a lean frame is not the same as bulking up. We do not want you wearing layer after layer of oversized sweatshirts or Cosby sweaters to make your frame fuller. The idea here is to layer subtly, with fitted pieces, to create a balanced look with your height.

Look for boxy jackets (a.k.a. "chubbies") with a heavy fabric like fur or faux fur to broaden the torso and give a stronger shoulder impression. A big collar helps too.

Start with a longer-length long-sleeve T-shirt in a brighter tone, and top with a fitted shorter sweater. The hem of the tee will pop at the waistline, adding depth to an outfit and helping fill out the shape of the sweater.

Fitted turtlenecks make necks look less giraffe-like. On a tall, lean frame, the neck is like the limbs; you want to keep them looking graceful, not gawky.

Use heavier belts to emphasize a waist, especially ones with eye-catching interest, like beading or sequins.

Janice couldn't believe that we found jeans long enough for her, and even though you can't see the hem in the picture, we swear we did! Several different companies are now making special styles for the longer limbed, and a few make only these styles.

When your jeans aren't long enough but you love the way they fit, tuck them in as we have here. With a pointy boot, you shorten the body only slightly, which actually helps the proportion of a tall, thin frame.

Universal Tip: If your calves are so thin that you have trouble finding boots that fit, look for high boots made of stretch leather (yes, they make that now!) so that the boot clings to your leg.

Seasonal Alternative: For a more casual spring look, try some cool (read: not athletic) sneakers in a bright color. And switch out the chubby jacket for something that is still boxy but less heavy, like a summer-weight leather motorcycle jacket.
